Nepali-born candidate contesting for Congress

AHN News Correspondent

Seattle, WA, United States (AHN) – A Nepali-born American, Darshan Rauniyar, has declared his candidacy as a Democratic candidate in Washington State’s 1st Congressional district.

Rauniyar is perhaps the first Nepali to run for the Congress.

Rauniyar immigrated to the United States 20 years ago to pursue an engineering degree. He has been active for the last decade in county and district level Democratic Party politics. He is an elected Democratic precinct committee officer, and served in the 1st Legislative District Democrats executive committee and Snohomish County Democratic Executive Committee.

Speaking with local Nepali media, he said that he has prioritized healthcare and employment opportunities as his electoral agenda.

“I expect support from the Nepali society in America for my candidacy, besides support of other Americans,” Rauniyar said.

He noted that 17 percent of the people in Washington State are of Asian origin.
