Getting inked may be painful, but all that can go to naught if you are unable to ensure that yourtattoo heals properly.
It's a few days of extra care and attention, but the time invested will go a long way in ensuring that your tattoo remains the same way for a long time. Here's a basic checklist of what you need to keep in mind when it comes to post tattoo care for your skin:
- Do not scratch if your tattoo itches. It is important to let the skin form a scab, which falls off on its own in due course. If you peel it off by force, you run the risk of having the ink leak out.
- Do not expose your tattoo to direct sunlight.
- Avoid swimming pools, especially public ones.
- Also avoid hot tubs and hot showers.
- Avoid pouring water on your tattoo for at least 10 days. Wash your hands, put a few drops of cold water over your tattoo to wet the surface, pat it dry lightly with a clean tissue and apply Vaselineover the entire surface of the tattoo.
- Do not put sunscreen lotion on the tattoo.
- It takes the skin about three-four days to form the scab, and then it takes anywhere between seven-10 days for the scab to come off, though in some cases, it can take up to a fortnight. Once the scab falls, the skin will still have a shiny dry layer which is actually the skin that is healing. Take care of that too.
